Volunteer Voices: Rachel Weiner

Rachel Weiner, Captain of Fire Department of Montgomery Township, started volunteering in March 2014 as a junior firefighter.

“Since the day I joined, I’ve learned and trained hard. I went through fire school to obtain Firefighter I and from there, I never stopped learning,” said Rachel.

On top of her Firefighter I certificate, Rachel has her Firefighter II, and has taken various classes such as rapid intervention, vertical ventilation, rope rescue, low/high angle rescue, officer classes and strategy and tactical classes.

While Rachel currently serves as a Captain and on few committees, she’s previously held positions as Lieutenant, President and Secretary.

“You can learn so much just from sitting around the kitchen table Don’t be afraid to ask questions because chances are, someone else has the same question as you,” said Rachel. “We are always a team no matter your rank.”

Rachel is the second female Captain at Fire Department of Montgomery Township and although she is a female firefighter, she isn’t treated any differently at her fire company.

“Women can do the exact same job as a man can. Firefighting isn’t a man’s job, but like any new firefighter, you need to put in the work and earn respect,” said Rachel. “But the men are supportive and eager to help train regardless of your gender.”

Rachel encourages any women interested in joining the fire service to apply to their local department.

“Montgomery County is a very busy county due to the high volume of residents, businesses and major highways,” said Rachel. “As this county continues to grow, the volunteers need to grow as well.”
