Angelina Banks is a full-time mother of two, but she still finds time to be a dedicated, steady presence behind the scenes at her local Montgomery County fire company, Wyndmoor Hose Company No. 1. As an administrative member assisting with the community car show to aiding station outreach, proving that volunteering can fit into a busy family life.
For Angelina, the fire company is a family as her girls were the driving force behind her stepping into her role at the fire house. Her children have many fond memories of the station, learning firsthand the value of service.
“I hope my girls learn that it is joyful and fun to serve others, especially your community,” said Angelina. “We all have our home life and we all have work, but this is about having a direct, tangible impact.”
Angelina finds that sometimes motherhood is similar to emergency services. The ability to stay calm and think on her feet is a skill she uses both at home and at the station.
“You have to assess and evaluate really quickly,” said Angelina. “If you can handle a toddler, you can handle an emergency.”
Chief DePaul understands that volunteering is just one aspect of a busy life and works with everyone’s schedule.
“Our availability might change over the years, but we show up as much as we can for each other and our neighbors,” said Angelina. “We have a great team, and we always have each other’s backs.”
There’s a spot for anyone looking to help out with their local fire company. Those interested in volunteering can fill out an inquiry form at www.montcofirefighters.org/contact-2/ to get connected.
